PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course

The required deep and underwater-navigation dives are joined by three optional Adventure Dives. The available choices depend on the location, instructor and conditions. A course with photography or buoyancy practice will feel different from one built around other interests, so ask what is actually planned rather than assuming every option is available.

An Adventure Dive introduces a topic; completing it does not automatically mean you have completed the entire corresponding specialty course. Ask your instructor how any credit toward further training works. Choose options because you want to learn the skills, not simply because they sound more advanced.

PADI permits qualifying Open Water divers to continue into Advanced training without a minimum number of additional logged dives. The minimum age for Junior Advanced Open Water is twelve. Age-specific depth and supervision conditions apply, so ask the instructor to explain the limits for the people actually enrolling.

Eligibility is not the same as personal comfort. If buoyancy, mask clearing or basic equipment use still takes most of your attention, explain that before booking. Additional practice or a refresher may make the next course more useful. Give the centre an honest picture of your recent diving rather than only the date on your certification card.

Ask how knowledge reviews, briefing, diving and debriefing fit into the proposed schedule. Confirm rental equipment and any requirements associated with the optional dives. If you are bringing your own computer, allow time to understand its controls and approved use rather than trying to learn them on a busy boat.

Discuss the backup plan if weather prevents the intended dive. A booking should make clear how the centre handles schedule changes and outstanding requirements. After the course, keep building experience within your training and the conditions you know; completing five dives is a starting point for continued practice, not proof of mastery in every environment.
